Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) are thrilled to announce the launch of an eLearning course on the Cognitive Disabilities Model (CDM) for Occupational Therapists. This course has been created by Occupational Therapists and people living with dementia across Wales, informed by Allen's Cognitive Disability Model.
The course equips occupational therapists with the knowledge to consider brain changes that cause cognitive impairment in the context of functional cognition. It provides learners with the skills and confidence to provide assessments, interventions, strategies, and support to enable people living with dementia to do the things of importance to them. It focuses on occupational performance and empowering people by identifying their strengths and needs.
Nicky Thomas, Associate Director of Workforce Transformation AHP for HEIW said:
“The AHP team at HEIW have been delighted to support the development of this resource. It has been an exciting project utilising the potential of Y Ty Dysgu, HEIW’s digital learning platform. The course is a mix of knowledge acquisition via self-directed digital learning resources interspersed with online lectures, assignments and support from local mentors. This facilitates the translation of knowledge into clinical practice. It will be delivered on an all-Wales basis, facilitating learning and knowledge sharing across organisational boundaries”
The course is being coordinated and delivered on an all-Wales basis by the Wales Cognitive Allens Interest Group who will determine where the eLearning course is needed. This approach is enabling equitable access to training for OTs across Wales, supporting the development of a highly skilled OT workforce across organisational and clinical settings.
